Amex for 12 year olds

Megan turned 12 and as an American "rite of passage" she was sent a credit card application in the mail. Sad commentary on our society....Any mail is great when you are 12 so she was thrilled. She opened it and read the whole thing. Mom - this is amazing, I can get 2 airline tickets to anywhere if I charge $500 before July.
How did Megan qualify for the American Express Rewards Gold Card? I wonder why our country is in financial crisis...
