Day 5–Exploring St. Kitts

We loaded up the sunscreen before heading out.  On our way to discover another beautiful Caribbean Island today – St. Kitts.  It is actually named after Christopher Columbus but they shorten it to St. Kitts.

This island felt quite a bit busier than the pier at St. Maarten.  Lots of shops, lots of people offering you taxi rides to see the island.  A little more industry.

Melissa and Katie had some close encounters with some monkeys!  Oh my goodness – Dallas and Wes look at that!  A monkey was on Melissa’s head! And Katie too!

We found a wonderful islander named Archie (you know where my office is…)  He was willing to show us a bit of the island and take us to the beach for snorkeling afterwards.  So off we went.

He explained a lot about the politics, ( his definition of politicians – first to make the laws, first to break the laws…) the industry and the people of the island as he drove us up to an old plantation.  We stopped on the way to buy water and the shop keeper took one look at Melissa’s sunburn and whipped out a knife, cut a stock of a nearby Aloe Vera plant, peeled it and began rubbing the yellow, slimy salve on Melissa’s legs.  It felt great!  SLIMY but such relief.

Some sites of St. Kitts – I am so glad that Dad had his little camera and that Melissa took her good Nikon with her.  She was willing to carry it and I kept borrowing it to take photos.  I left mine on the ship.  So thanks to Dad and Melissa for the photography of this day.

You can’t tell from our faces but it was great to get into the van.  It had air conditioning and was a wonderful relief from the humidity and heat.  I love it but everything is sticky!

These islands depend on the cruise industry.  We are the tail end of the busy season.  After March, they only get one  or two cruise ships a week.  The people of the islands are quick to say thank you for your business!  IMG_1442

On the way to the southern part of the island, we stopped at a point where you could see both the Atlantic Ocean to the left and the Caribbean Sea to the right.  Amazing!

After our tour it was off to Shipwreck Beach for lunch, snorkeling and relaxing in the sun….with lots of sunscreen.  We were more careful today… We had so much fun snorkeling.  I taught Katie and Andrew and Melissa how and then we took turns with the mask and fins.  I saw blue “Doree” from Nemo and the yellow and black striped fish I’ve seen before in Hawaii.  The kids loved it.  I had some fun with Megan’s underwater camera!
